Net Plays Key Role In Big Decisions

from the well,-of-course-it-does dept

The latest research coming from the folks at Pew has found that (not at all surprisingly), many people turn to the internet for helping making big decisions such as concerning education or health care. However, they're much less likely to go online for more "personal" things, like getting romance or legal advice. I'm actually a little surprised at those last two being not as popular - as I would figure both are the types of things that would be perfect to get info about online. Of course, when you look at the actual numbers, the differences aren't as big as the article makes them out to be. 36% of people surveyed used the internet in deciding a university to attend. About 25% used it to get more info about an illness (their own or someone they know). So, the 15% who looked for love advice and the 13% who looked for legal advice aren't that far behind.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
