Creative Commons Launching

from the start-sharing dept

We've spoken about the Creative Commons project before, and today Larry Lessig is finally going to officially launch this clearinghouse of content. I'm going to his presentation today about it, and will try to report back with some notes on what happened. If the wireless internet access at the O'Reilly Conference is working (it's been on again/off again), I'll try to post it during his talk. What will be interesting is to see how the entertainment industry responds. Despite all the information that's come out in the past few months about this project, they haven't had much to say so far. Update: Saw the original presentation. Lessig is speaking right now. It's not actually launching for a few months. The big question right now, though, that people had was how do you prevent people from putting other people's works into the public domain?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
