Shop Online With Cash At 7-Eleven

from the experimenting dept

7-Eleven is going to start experimenting with online kiosks in their stores that take cash for e-commerce purchases. They figure they're targeting the millions of Americans who either don't have internet access or don't have credit cards. They'll probably add a $1 transaction fee. You won't actually be able to surf the internet, but just look at a few goods from just a few select merchants. The one offering they're talking about that really does sound useful will be the ability to print out a map with directions. While many of us do this from home, imagine being completely lost and being able to just run into the first 7-Eleven you find and printing out a map with directions? Overall, though, I'm not sure that people will start rushing down to the local 7-Eleven to buy things online.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Not so new.....

The post office (now Consignia) in the UK are advertising a 'pay as you go' ecommerce option. You can buy credit from them to use online. Much like the old 'postal order' which was a pay-as-you go cheque.

I don't know much about this being a credit-card wielder but it's useful.

    Imagine

Imagine being lost and being able to run into 7-11 or a gas station and buy a local map! It sure is exciting living in the future, when such things are possible.

Haha. Very good point... and one that actually did go through my head when reading the article. However, being able to print out the specific door to door directions is certainly much cooler than buying a random local map, when you might not even know where on that map you are.
