eBay Still Popular For Criminals

from the the-new-new-pawn-shop dept

Over a year ago we had a post about how eBay was pushing out pawn shops as the popular way to fence stolen goods. It seems that nothing much has changed, as plenty of stolen products are still showing up and eBay still claims it's just a "minor" problem - nothing you should concern yourself with. However, the article does have one story of a woman who bought a laptop via eBay, and then found out it was stolen when she tried to call for service from the manufacturer.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

the old adage doesn't even work..

The problem (or boon) for fencing on ebay is that even the old adage they quoted in the article, ``As we always say, if the deal is too good to be true, it usually is.'', doesn't hold true.. on ebay, there's no need to drop the price of an item simply because it's stolen..

drop the price on stolen goods

Yes, there is reason to drop the price on stolen goods - how else can you compete with the other thieves .
E-bay buyers are a bunch of air heads - they think sellers have a garden in their back yard where they grow the items.
