Loudcloud Changes Name And Business Models

from the escaping-the-past dept

I'm always a little nervous about any company who's focus seems to be more about who founded it, then what they do. It seems that the massively overhyped Marc Andreessen-founded Loudcloud (and, it seems, you simply can't talk about the company without mentioning Andreessen) has decided that this time they haven't been able to change the world. The whole company was founded around the idea of offering managed hosting services to companies. Andreessen even said that he wanted a business that was offering a service (which he learned while working at AOL) because of the recurring revenue. He felt it was much more stable than selling software. So, now, they've sold the managed hosting business to EDS, changed their name to Opsware (get rid of the negative connotation of Loudcloud), and are focusing on selling software. The NY Times ran a more detailed look at these plans, last night, before they knew that the hosting business was being sold to EDS.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
