Betting The Farm On Picture Messaging
Ericsson has been steadily losing ground in the handset business to Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and Siemens. But with the T68 getting more and more popular and the SonyEricsson jv cranking out new products, things might turn out all right. Today they rolled out 4 news phones and a new snap on camera. SonyEricsson seems to be betting the farm on picture messaging. More and more of their products support snapping pix and emailing them right away. Plus all their new GSM phones are triple-band meaning that one phone can be used on North America, Europe and Asia. That should provide some decent manufacturing efficiencies as GSM gets bigger in the US. Oh and Nokia introduced its second triple-band phone, the 6610. SonyEricsson seems to be going the route of focusing on innovative handsets with interesting features while Nokia is plodding along fat and happy with its 34% market share.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
