Online Gambling Bill Passes

from the step-away-from-the-online-casino dept

The House has passed an online gambling bill that very few people seem to like. The goal of the bill is to try to shut down offshore casinos, and prevent people in the US from using them. There is, of course, the big question of why the government should be preventing people from doing what they want to do with their own money. There's also the question about why they're trying to shut down sites that are not hosted in this country. Finally, there are people who are involved in what is currently "legal" gambling, who are afraid that the law also applies to them, and will cause them all sorts of problems. I'm wondering, after all this, how the bill actually passed?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

They only care because they can't tax you on it. Now if it were say the lottery they wouldn't really care would they?
