Virgin To The Rescue

from the help!-i'm-on-a-blind-date-and-can't-bail! dept

Virgin Mobile USA finally announced details of their services and launch plans today. The service will go live this Sunday in Sacramento, CA and Columbus, OH, with a nation-wide rollout by the end of July. They are using a prepaid pricing scheme similar to their plan in the UK where the first 10 minutes of calling a day are charged at one rate and all subsequent calls of the day are charged at a discounted rate. But even more innovative are their value-add services. Take "Rescue Ring", for exmaple. Users can schedule a call to interrupt them at a set time to bail them out of potentially boring or awkward situations. The 13-25 year-old demo is going to eat that up. Hell, some of us could use that on practically every date we go on these days.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
