Declare Email Independence

from the get-your-own-domain-name dept

I've owned my own domain for nearly five years now, and I think I still am surprised when people tell me their personal email address is a @aol.com, @attbi.com or @anyISP. What if you change ISPs? I have an @attbi.com address, I think. I've never used it, though, and I doubt I ever will. The idea of relying on the ISP you have as your permanent email address seems strange. I can somewhat understand those who use free webmail addresses, since they assume those companies are staying around, and you can use those addresses even if you switch ISPs. It seems I'm not the only one who wonders about such things. Simson Garfinkel's latest column is basically telling people to get their own domain names to avoid having to deal with losing their address when they change ISPs (or their ISP changes on them).

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

wow, what great circa-1999 advice. people are no longer looking for internet "tips and tricks". It just is a part of life, whichever way they use it.
