Where Are You?

Often the first question one asks when calling someone on a mobile phones is "Where are you?". AT&T Wireless has launched "Find Friends", a location-based service part of the mMode suite of applications, that will answer that question for you. Users can set up a list of mMode subscribers they want to locate, provided those users have given them persmission to be added to the list. Once you locate a users you can contact them via voice or sms. The service can even suggest nearby locations if you want to meet. In areas with high base station density the service can pinpoint locations down to street intersections. This is a good start for location-based service since its about people-to-people communication and not about advertising. But it probably won't be used too much by mMode's current business users. It could however take off once it gets into the hands of the youth market.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
