No Need To Sign Up For An ISP In Egypt
from the just-take-it-out-of-the-phone-bill dept
Apparently, people are using the internet a lot more in Egypt since they ditched flat rate ISP pricing, and simply started paying ISPs out of the phone bill. Phone calls cost about $0.20/hour, and through a revenue sharing plan, ISPs just get some part of that (about 70%) for calls that go into their system. This means that users don't even need to sign up for an ISP. They just need to call whichever phone number of whichever ISP they feel like using. It seems almost counterintuitive that per minute charges would encourage more internet use over flat-rate pricing - but it seems the relatively high cost of flat-rate pricing encouraged lots of people to share a single internet connection.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
