Mobile Phones As The Lighters Of A New Generation
from the times-change dept
Fewer and fewer people smoke these days, and I have heard people joke about the fact that at concerts no one pulls out a lighter anymore for the slow songs, because no one carries a lighter any more. It seems that for many younger music fans - some of whom don't even know about the whole "lighter" tradition, the lighter is being replaced by the glow of a mobile phone. However, if they're being held aloft during the music, it's not to shine some light, it's probably to let a friend who couldn't make the concert listen in. I can't wait for the RIAA to try to crack down on this sort of "music piracy". A concert promoter quoted in the article says he hasn't heard of any artists complaining - but since when has the RIAA really cared about what the artists want?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
