Email Ads Don't Work
from the well,duh dept
I don't think this comes as much of a surprise to anyone (except perhaps advertisers), but very very few people click on emailed advertising links. While they may have done so a little while back when it was a novelty, now they simply don't click. Of course, I think the biggest reason for this is that just about any commercial email these days is considered spam and gets very quickly dumped into the trash. If advertisers could actually target the ads like they promised years ago, and perhaps not send so many, maybe they would work better. If I received a single, targeted commercial email a month with things that were interesting to me, then I'd be more interested in what it has to say. But, if they start sending useless emails everyday, I'm very quickly going to learn to ignore them. Of course, this isn't rocket science, but advertisers don't seem to understand this.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
