Do People Actually Want The Wireless Web

from the too-little,-too-late? dept

A new study asking consumers about their opinions on wireless internet access shows that the number of people who are interested in using the wireless web is dropping. The article isn't clear, but they appear to just mean accessing the internet on your mobile phone, and not things like WiFi. It's really not that surprising that interest is waning. If the wireless carriers hadn't hopelessly overhyped the wireless web, things wouldn't be this bad. If they hadn't told everyone that the "wireless web" would be just like the regular web, but on a smaller screen, maybe people would be a bit more interested. What's going to be interesting now is how quickly consumers respond to the new high speed services that are coming. They may be so turned off by false promises from the carriers that they'll be very slow to sign up.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
