Kellner Says People Will Pay For Skipping Ads
from the oh,-they'll-pay... dept
Jamie Kellner, chairman of Turner Broadcasting Systems, is really trying to make a name for himself trashing a technology he clearly doesn't understand. This is the man, of course, who claimed that people who skip commercials were "stealing" television. Now, he's claiming that because of evil PVR devices like TiVo, we're all going to have to pay an extra $250 a year to watch TV. His "rough calculations" make a number of faulty assumptions - with the biggest one being that new business models based on PVRs won't spring up. Already, watching TiVo experiment with different types of advertising models is encouraging. I won't even mention the fact that most people pay for cable already, and still get inundated with tons of useless commercials. Where does the entertainment industry find these shortsighted execs?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

short sighted execs...
These hunchbacks are not in touch with reality. Somewhere along the line, they've forgotten that everyone with a good job can go see mountains, prairies, valleys, oceans, etc., besides watching TV.
Better reign in that greed boys; I've got a library of books that are sure to keep me from watching TV if I need them to.
