Can The Internet Survive Censorship?

from the good-question dept

Going well with the article posted just beneath this one, Jonathan Zittrain, one of the authors of last week's study about what different countries censor online, has written an article discussing the implications of what they found. It puts some more context around his study. Basically, he points out that the internet has always been simply about moving data from endpoint to endpoint, with no concern for what the data is - and little to no blocking of any data within the network. Any filtering was done at the end computer. However, with the growth in countries that censor the internet, and other things like spam blocking systems, suddenly filtering is being done within the network itself. The problem is that it's very difficult to determine what should and shouldn't be filtered. He wonders if the strain of these attempted filters will cause more problems online than they solve.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
