Scrambling Credit Card Pin Numbers

from the how-to-prevent-fraud dept

The BBC is running an article about Swivel Technologies who have created a system they say helps prevent credit card fraud online, by changing a user's PIN number for each transaction. The article doesn't explain the system all that clearly, but it sounds like a random code is generated for each transaction, and you just have to transpose your PIN number via the code. Of course, I can't remember ever having to use a PIN number when completing a credit card purchase online, so I'm not really sure how useful this would be. It also strikes me as the sort of system that will confuse the hell out of a lot of people, and not make them much happier about using their credit cards online.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Get used to inputting your PIN at point of sale - this is gointg to be required for all debit and credit card purchases in the near future...And then the crooked shopworker will have your card details AND your PIN - something needs to be done about the security hole here...
