If you've tried connecting to Techdirt for the past 5 hours or so, you probably haven't been able to get in. Our network connection has been up and down (mostly down) due to some sort of denial of service attack that our network provider claims made a fairly large number of their machines inaccessible. I'm not happy about it, and we're looking into things we can do to prevent this from happening again. I'm hoping that the problem has been solved for now.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. DOS attach
Just out of curiousity, who is your provider and where to do they claim the attacks were directed at? My provider, www.phpwebshosting.com, told me that one of my sites, http://www.thebishop.net, was down because of a DOS attack against their facility in Fremont, CA.

  My hosting company is Actionweb.com, and I have nothing but good things to say about them. I've used them for almost 5 years now, and they're phenomenal. I've used a number of other hosts for other projects, and they all were terrible. Now I host everything through Actionweb.
  
  Actionweb uses a few different facilities to host their machines. One of them is located in Fremont, and is run by He.net. He.net hosts machines for a LOT of different hosting companies, so I would imagine that your hosting company was hosted there as well. He.net apparently had a DDOS attack against their routers - not directed at a specific server machine. It brought down (I'm told) at least two of their main routers, taking out a large number of machines, including Techdirt (and apparently yours as well).
  
  I've hosted machines directly with He.net before and they were a disappointment. Having Actionweb run the machines through He.net has worked much better, but even they are saying that in the last month He.net has been having a lot of problems. They're thinking of moving all of their machines to another facility that they've been having better luck with.
  
  On a related note, He.net colos with AboveNet (now MetroMediaFiber or something like that), and which is having tremendous problems itself - and is shutting down some of their centers. So, I was wondering if that was going to cause some problems as well.
