What To Do With All That Cash?
from the wait-it-out? dept
Despite the troubled tech economy, the big tech companies (Microsoft, Cisco, Intel, and Oracle) have plenty of cash on hand. Now, some investors are beginning to push them to do something with that cash. Having it sit around earning 2% isn't what they bought into the company for. Some are putting pressure on the companies to offer (or increase) their dividends. Other than that, the options are generally to use the cash for more R&D, buy back shares off the market, or buy up other companies. All of the companies have been known to do a combination of these things, and they still have plenty of cash left over. One fear is that with so much cash, they may end up over spending on other companies. Of course, having a lot of cash around makes for a nice buffer in case the economy continues to sink.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
