From Failure To... Canada?

from the well,-it's-something,-eh? dept

I know there are a fair number of Canadians who read this site, and I'll say upfront that Canadians put up with way too much crap from Americans joking about their very nice country. That said, it's hard not to be at least marginally amused to read about Iridium claiming that Canadians may make or break the company. This is, of course, the second version of the company named Iridium, but the first one was planning to take over the world with their satellite phones, and now all they can do is talk about their high hopes for selling into the (vast) wilderness areas of Canada as their "best" market.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Yeh Right!

All you have to do is go out into the snowstorm to get a line of sight to the bird.
Sure. Same thing that was wrong with the original concept.

Here's one for the maketing failures file

Did they do any research on where the population
    is located?

We've got 3 very strong cellular companies on
    3 differant technologies. If a sat-phone is
dependant on us, they're not going to go very
far. A 4watt Motorola on the MicroCell GSM system
can easily maintain a usable signal when you're
    15km from the nearest tower.

Did you read the article? First sentence:
      "Canadians in remote locations..."
Yes, a good majority of people are located within 15 km of a tower, and companies are slowly branching out, but there is A LOT of area in Canada not covered by a cell phone tower, and people do live in those spaces. The article doesn't give a lot of detail (unfortunately), but there are places it could be used.
