Autism Link To Geek Genes
from the sounds-familiar dept
Back in December we posted a story about higher rates of autism among geeks. It seems the British have no picked up on this as well, as the BBC (via dsg, yet again) has an article about how geeks are more likely to have "autism genes". Basically, those with varying degrees of autism may be drawn to the tech industry, since their skills can be put to good use. Then you have a higher concentration of male and female geeks with autistic genes, making it more likely for them to mate... and produce even more autistic children. As an aside, I'll post again (as I did with the original story) that you should pick up Speaking With the Angel, which is a good collection of short stories (having nothing to do with autism). However, some of the proceeds of the book go to help fund a school for autistic children.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
