Nextel Going Mainstream?

Despite their financial troubles, we've always been intrigued by Nextel and their unique approach to the market. With their proprietary walkie-talkie like DirectConnect feature they have carved out a niche with business users. But could they be expanding to go after the consumer market? Today they announced the acquisition of NeoWorld, a holding company for spectrum that will help Nextel expand their service. In a related SEC filing they also noted that they are testing a new service for the youth market. Hmmm. While DirectConnect is favored by construction workers and Dennis Franz (Nextel's burly spokesperson), we could see kids lapping up DirectConnect with the right marketing and price plans. It would be like voice IM for them. Update: We did a little more digging and it looks like Nextel is working with Australian outfit Boost Mobile. Boost runs a pre-paid youth MNVO in Australia on Optus' network. Nextel plans to launch the trial next month in California and Nevada. Considering that Nextel isn't a household name with teens, this looks like a smart way for them to enter the youth market.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
