Path Of Least Surveillance

from the we-know-where-you've-been-and-where-you-are-going dept

As wireless carriers work on location-based services, privacy advocates are concerned about the ability of these systems to be used to track people's movements. However, we hear very little about all the surveillance cameras popping up. New York City has at least 10,000 cameras - six per city block. It's estimated that Londoners are photographed 300 times per day by security cameras. These cameras are installed with the best of intentions - to help track down criminals and terrorists - but, like any technology, it can be abused. I have nothing against being caught on film, but I would like to know where I might be caught on film. In fact, maybe it would be cheaper and just as effective to put up signs warning people they are being photographed, than actually installing the cameras.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
