Movie Industry To Try Public Education On Copyright Issues

from the brainwash-'em-young dept

At the same conference where the DOJ said they're going to throw file traders in jail, the head of News Corp said that an (unnamed) movie theater chain will air public service announcements before movies start reminding people that downloading movies is theft. I would imagine that such a plan is likely to fail. First, it pisses people off by wasting even more time before a movie starts (these days they're up to at least 12 minutes of previews, I think). Also, the fact is that people already know that downloading breaks some laws. They just don't agree with those laws. I doubt public service announcements will have much of an effect. Maybe the industry would be better served taking some time understanding why their customers want access to downloadable content - and figuring out a better way to provide for that need.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

The last couple of movies I've been to had 20 minutes of previews. To avoid sitting in the front row you have to be there at least 30 minutes in advance too - which means 50 minutes of nothing waiting for a movie to start. And they wonder why I only go to 2 or 3 a year.
