Get Ready For Political Spam... On Your Mobile Phone

from the oh-please-no dept

We've had a number of stories about political spam on Techdirt, and while I was hoping politicians would get the message that pissing off voters is a bad policy, it seems they're not getting it. After some discussion, the Federal Election Commission has said it's ok for politicians to send political spam messages as SMS text messages to mobile phones. They've taken away the disclosure requirements saying who paid for the ad, because there just isn't enough room in an SMS text message... Yes, the thinking here is completely backwards. They should have just banned political spam (SMS or otherwise) outright as a dangerous practice. The article points out, by the way, that without the disclosure rules, it's possible that political supporters could get creative - and do things like send fake political spam from a competitor, knowing it'll piss off voters.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
