File Sharing Still Confusing The Experts

from the flip...-flop dept

A few months back we posted an interview with well known economist Stan Liebowitz where he said he was changing his mind about file sharing. A few months before he had written a study saying it was bad for the music industry. But, in June, he said the evidence didn't support that, and file sharing wasn't bad for the industry. Now that he's been looking at more data he says, oh wait, maybe it is bad for the industry. If anything, this flip flopping should cast some doubt on his conclusions, and this interview does nothing to help his case. A few times he admits that he hasn't run certain statistics that might be helpful, and he also admits that some of his conclusions are "going out on a limb" and based on some assumptions that don't seem to have any support in reality.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
