Downloads Blamed For Low CD Sales

from the of-course-they-are dept

A new RIAA sponsored study shows (what else?) that lower CD sales are caused by people downloading music. The report seems to ignore some other very basic possibilities: such as the economic downturn, the fact that the music industry has been putting out increasingly bad music, and the lack of airplay and promotion the music industry is allowing to new or different acts. Those couldn't possibly have anything to do with it at all. The Register does a good job tearing apart the report, and points out the silliest of the RIAA's arguments. In order to show just how big a threat downloadable music is, they mention that they've increased the seizure of illegal pirated CDs lately by nearly 70%. Wait a second... illegal pirated CDs have absolutely nothing to do with downloadable music. If people are downloading all their music instead of buying CDs (as the report claims) than they're certainly not buying illegal burned CDs as well.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
