Yet Another Dot Com Making Money

from the what-a-shocker dept

The press seems absolutely shocked these days when they come across a dot com that actually makes money. The latest company to get attention is the online reseller of used books, ABE Books, which actually just ties together a bunch of independent used book sellers into a single system. There's really nothing special about the idea, and it works really well. Just a smart business idea, well executed. Funny how that works. Of course, if the publishing industry acted like the music and movie industry we'd be hearing about lawsuits and bills introduced in Congress to protect us from this dangerous "theft" of intellectual property...

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Used CDs

Does anybody else remember the Record Industry movement of ten or so years ago to ban the resale of CDs?

This was not long after a record company initiative in Congress to effectively ban the "record" button on audio equipment.

    Fools.
