Changing Cell Phone Laws For Students

from the keep-up-to-date dept

In the 80s, the assumption was that if you were carrying a pager in a school, you were probably a drug dealer, so many states passed laws banning mobile communications devices in schools. These days, however, those laws are clearly out of date, and many parents actually require their kids to carry mobile phones for safety reasons. Of course, many of those laws are still on the books, and students are often being unfairly punished by administrators sticking to the letter of the law. People are finally starting to fight back to repeal these out-of-date laws. It's amazing how slowly the legal process seems to lag behind reality. I'm actually surprised that these laws ever passed in the first place. Couldn't each school district set up their own rules? What's the legal basis for banning pagers in school?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
