It's Too Bad Pop Up Blocking Software Is Even Needed
from the what-a-waste dept
While Earthlink has gotten a ton of publicity for offering pop up blocking software with their ISP service, someone is pointing out how sad it is that things have gotten so bad that getting rid of annoying ads is now a marketing tool. The writer says, as naive as it sounds, she had hoped that the internet would reach its potential without becoming a huge annoying billboard run by advertisers - rather than the perfect platform for the consumers who made it such a big deal in the first place. The article also points out that once sites started using popups, they stopped caring about their readers completely. It was all about how much more they could annoy their users - which, as I try to point out at least a few times each day - is the (weak) business model of those who have no creativity.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
