No Mobile Phones For You!

from the take-the-law-into-your-own-hands dept

The CEO of Cell Block came up with the idea for his company after he was annoyed at a dinner where people were talking on their mobile phones. Just because he got annoyed, he decided that he should take away that right from other people by developing a wireless signal blocker that can make mobile phones (and other wireless technologies) unusable in certain areas. Of course, there have been other companies (mostly outside the US) that have created the same kind of technology, so it's not clear what's special about these guys. Besides (more importantly), it's still very much illegal to block wireless spectrum in the US - but Cell Block is pushing to have that overturned. Of course, they need to fight against the entire cellular industry to do so, which leads to the following quote from the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association: "What we're seeing here is something similar to a person choosing to block the street with a barricade because they don't like the noise in their own back yard."

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Illegal to block wireless? What about in your own home? I agree that it's a dangerous thing to go about blocking wireless signals willy nilly, but I thought blocking them in your own place would be a civil liberty? What the heck do I know, I'm Canadian.

What about doctors and other people who are on-call? Cellphones aren't exclusively used for idle conversation.

    not the right approach

In the US you don't have the right to block because the use of spectrum is licensed, and the FCC won't give out licenses to block (except certain military uses I suppose).

Anyway the right thing is to have a device that sends out a low-power signal instructing phones in the area to go silent (switch to vibrate, or maybe switch to "straight to voicemail"). Over time new phones would get this feature. Then people with legit reasons (doctors, parents who have a babysitter, etc) can keep the phone on, but absent-minded losers won't bother the rest of us.

A similar feature would be good to tell cameras "disable your flash" since lots of museums are being trashed by flashes from people who don't know how to switch it off!

    A better analogy...

...would be keeping people from pouring smoke into your lungs from their cigarettes. Your right to blab on a cell phne during a movie ends where my ear begins.

Want it blocked? You can do that.

No problem. And it looks like wood paneling. Its a wood laminate with 2 layers of metal. It blocks the radio signals, as opposed to broadcasting garbage. Passive block == legal.
