Has Amazon Had The Last Laugh?
from the focus-focus-focus dept
While the media loved to hype up Amazon.com during the boom, they also loved to point out it's lack of profitability once the bubble burst. The cover story from the latest Business 2.0 is about whether or not Jeff Bezos and Amazon.com are having the last laugh. The article points out that the company has continued to focus on building a long term company, and not just a short term dot com to flip. It's an interesting article, and I think a lot of the points are valid. Amazon certainly has done some "tweaking" (some of which went beyond the tweaking stage) of their business model over time, partly to make Wall Street happy, but on the whole they have continued to focus on providing a strong service for their customers. Though, I also have a problem with the "last laugh" designation, because with business, there is no finish line. So, "last laughs" often don't mean anything tomorrow.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
