No Clear Path for Deutsche Telekom
Reports have been flying around all morning about DT's plans for its US arm T-Mobile USA (formerly Voicestream). DT has been investigating merging the unit with either AT&T Wireless or Cingular. But at the same time the company is indicating that it may not want to sell off one of its fastest growing units. The reality is that even though T-Mobile USA is a fast growing company, it will have a very difficult time getting out of sixth place in the US market. DT should merge the unit with the partner offering the best terms. While this would be a blow to their global branding, assuming that the new enity would take the name of the US partner, they would still have a piece of a major player in the US market. At 50% penetration, growth is already slowing down and carriers are battling churn more than ever before. Consolidation is inevitable.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
