Are PVRs Dead?

from the no,-just-a-little-slow-to-catch-on dept

Are personal video recorders dead? That's the question asked by the MediaGuardian in the UK. It is, of course, a silly question. People who have them, love them. I haven't heard of anyone who has one who doesn't rave about how it has changed the way they watch TV. Even the PVR makers say that word-of-mouth has been their best marketing. So why aren't they catching on like wildfire? In the article, many people say there's no easy way to market them. There's no single sentence that sums up the benefits properly. The other big issue is the price, which stubbornly refuses to come down to a reasonable level. Like most products, it sounds like the PVR is just slightly slower to catch on than those with a vested interest (including the analysts) would have hoped. It seems pretty clear that they'll catch on eventually - but it might just take a bit more time.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
