Intelligence Community Begins IT Overhaul

from the how-do-you-share-classified-info dept

The U.S. intelligence community is trying to figure out how to use technology to better share info. Unlike normal collaboration offerings, sharing classified info raises some unique issues. They're apparently putting in place a system that will make it easier to automatically share documents while stripping out classified parts. The article also talks about their "open source news" program that lets people share news reports from around the world. Not quite sure how that qualifies as "open source", but the site seems to be down right now (or maybe they're just blocking me...), so there's not much more info available there.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Open Source

Open Source is a term that has been in use in the intelligence community for a _very_ long time to describe intelligence information derived from "open" or unclassified sources. Basically stuff that can be gotten from newspapers, magazines, etc... Of course nowadays that includes stuff off of the web as well.
