How The Recording Industry Is Killing The Goose That Lays The Golden Eggs

from the facts?--what-facts? dept

As many people know, I have very strong feelings about how the music industry is killing themselves by trying to stamp out file sharing (whereas, the industry thinks the opposite). Dan Bricklin (found via Dan Gillmor) has written a good essay talking about the many reasons why the music industry is wrong. He discusses the evidence that many people buy more music after downloading songs. He also suggests other reasons why aggregate music sales have gone down (such as people who talk on cell phones to kill time instead of listening to a portable CD player). A good read that the music industry will, of course, deny. They're so completely set on their viewpoint, it's scary. Folks like Bricklin are telling them that if they just stopped and realized it, they're actually hurting themselves more by trying to prevent file sharing.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
