Sun Bets The Company On N1

from the moving-forward... dept

With all the talk about Microsoft's plans for next generation computing systems, here comes Sun with their own goals. It seems that Sun has been working furiously on a project called N1, which is sort of grid computing on steroids. It's designed to do away with many of the issues involved in having many different computers networked together. Under N1, it seems, all those computers begin to act as a single computer, grabbing whichever resources it needs for whichever project. In other words, Sun may finally be living up to their slogan "the network is the computer". Sun is basically betting the company that N1 will become the way that computers work in the future. Definitely an interesting read. Update: Silicon.com has just a few more details, and says Sun is planning to outline its N1 program on Thursday.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
