Identity Theft: Fact And Fiction

A few weeks ago we posted an article by Network Solution's CTO David Holtzman about how laws couldn't stop identity theft, and the only way to really stop it was to give up all of our privacy, all the time, so we could always be tracked. Now, Jonathan Rusch, a lawyer for the DOJ on these issues responds by saying that legal enforcement does work against identity theft. He says the problem is that too many people don't understand how identity theft works. The important things to know are that it can happen to anyone, it can go on for a while before it's detected, and it can continue having consequences long after it's been stopped. If people are more aware of what happens, he believes, they can report identity theft to authorities quickly, and help to make the laws against identity theft more effective.
