Technology vs. Civil Liberties

The Washington Post is rehashing the debate about biometrics technology taking away our civil liberties. They cover the usual ground of people being "put in a lineup" without their consent via facial recognition technology. The ACLU gets off a quote about how they won't even talk about the privacy implications of facial recognition technology because they don't believe it works. All of this, of course, structures the debate as one of "technology vs. civil liberties", which is limiting. There certainly are security solutions that involve technology and work to protect individual's civil liberties. Too often people assume that there's a basic tradeoff between privacy and security.
