Hollywood Bullying Colleges About File Sharing

from the intimidation-as-a-tactic dept

No surprise here, but the movie studios have apparently hired a company named MediaForce to send threatening cease-and-desist letters to universities where they find students sharing movies online. However, it appears that they're not necessarily following the proper legal procedures, and often are overstepping their bounds. Furthermore, despite giving a contact name and phone number, they don't respond to any calls from the universities. Instead, they just keep threatening with more cease-and-desist letters. Wouldn't it be amazing if Hollywood spent 1/10 as much as they're spending on lawyers these days offering people a simple, useful, file sharing service?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Hollywood: The new China

So Hollywood now has the right to check anyones computer for items that it doesn't approve of? It's a shame the founding fathers didn't concieve of a need to protect citizens from corporations. I wonder if the government could get around illegal searches by asking Jack for a quick favor...
