Smart Homes Keep Eye On The Elderly

from the spy-on-your-grandparents dept

Last week we had an article talking about how you can now use new technology to spy on your kids all the time. Well, why stop with your kids? You can now spy on your grandparents too. TechTV is running a story about new "smart homes" that place sensors everywhere to constantly check up on the person living there. It actually doesn't seem like a bad idea for people who need some sort of assisted living, but don't necessarily want to move into an assisted living center or to hire a full time person to monitor them in their own home. Of course, this might mean that the "I've fallen and I can't get up!" woman is out of a job. These sensors will be able to determine that without the woman having to press the button to call for help.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
