Ask Jeeves Ditches Pop Ups

from the hallelujah dept

I have to admit that I'm somewhat shocked that more and more sites have started to realize that pop-ups are bad and piss off their users. I honestly thought that most sites would keep their head in the sand and make up silly excuses for why their users might actually want to have pop up ads sent to them. However, one-by-one certain sites are ditching pop ups. The latest to add to that list is Ask Jeeves, which has responded to "visitor criticism" by ditching the ads. They're also scaling back on banner ads. Overall, the company has realized that targeted advertising (based on the search terms entered) is more valuable, and pop ups are never targeted.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Ask Jeeves has visitors still? Goodness, I thought they would have gone away a long time ago. Why would anyone use this crap?

by the way, I asked jeeves the last question, to which he replied:

    >>I also use Visio, but only for drawing diagrams >>as illustration in manuals. Frankly, I think
