3G Faces Brighter Future Than Forecast
Could it be? Maybe we need to add an "underhype" category in addition to the "overhype" one. After the number of negative stories predicting that 3G networks would never live up to the hype they generated over the past few years, a new report has come out saying that things won't be as bad as the most negative predictions either. Since it's now popular to pan the possibilities of 3G, some are now suggesting that the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction, and the opportunities for 3G might end up in the "not so bad" category. The report, though, does suggest that carriers not try to charge high fees initially in a desperate effort to recoup costs, as that's likely to drive away customers. This (often repeated) suggestion seems like a no-brainer, but it hasn't seem to convinced most of the carriers just yet (though, it appears a few might be seeing the light, finally).Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
