A Dorm For Dreamers
from the I-wish-I-had-this... dept
For a few years it was cool to say you started a company out of your college dorm room. These days, such things are met with a bit more skepticism, but the University of Maryland has created a special dorm for student entrepreneur wannabes. It sounds like a great place. The dorm will have fancy conference rooms, white boards, wireless connectivity, and a phone system that will ring both your dorm and mobile phone at the same time. They also bring in speakers and mentors to help the students along. Most importantly, though, it puts a bunch of entrepreneurial students together and lets them do their thing. Out of 100 students currently in the program, 20 have already started up companies - six of which are making money. It really sounds like a great program. I wonder if other universities will start imitating it.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
