United Online To Give Free Sample Of Premium Access

from the spend-your-weekend-online dept

NetZero made a name for itself by offering free internet access (along with what always struck me as the most annoying commercials on TV). They eventually realized it wasn't much of a business and instead changed their name to United Online (in merging with Juno) and started offering a "discount ISP" instead. They kept a free offer going, but it is severely limited. However, the people who still use that free offer pretty much know what they're getting into, so I'm not sure how many people are going to be enticed by United Online's promotion to offer "free" access to their paid-for dialup service all weekend long. I would guess, in fact, that most people who use the free ISP use it as a backup to another ISP and don't really care about any of the additional features that come with the premium service (such as email and no floating banner ads).

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
