Virtual Visits To Doctors Help Cut Costs

from the and-yet,-we-still-can't-email-our-doctors dept

A new study suggests that an online chat with your doctor may be just as effective as an in-person visit, while reducing the costs. Doctors, themselves, found online consultations to be "suitable" (as long as they got paid, of course). Personally, I would love to be able to do an online consultation if I needed to discuss something non-urgent and which didn't require physical tests. My current healthcare provider has an "online nurse" program that will let you log into a chat session with a trained nurse, which I've used on occassion, but a full online doctor's visit would be even better, and make it more likely that I would actually use my healthcare provider when problems arose rather than being lazy and hoping that I just get better.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Sure, if your doctor

    1. knows how to type
    2. knows how to use a computer

Far as I've heard, the majority of doctors don't know how to use e-mail. Their computer skills are quite poor compared to other white-collar occupations.
