Rationalizing Phony Degrees From Non-Existent Colleges

from the watch-'em-squirm dept

There have been plenty of articles in the past about the various diploma mills that simply give you a diploma based on how much you're willing to pay, but the following article is the first I've seen that has actually tracked down people who bought their diplomas through such "schools". The diploma mills say they grant degrees based on "life experience", but if you replace "life experience" with "fees paid" it would be more accurate. However, what's really funny is the way people (including someone running for Congress) try to dodge questions about the degrees, or to rationalize why they're legitimate. Since I know plenty of people who actually do have PhDs, I would think that they wouldn't appreciate someone claiming that their paid-for doctorate is okay, because "I've been around. I've paid my dues." The other good quote comes from a master of understatement at the FBI: "If you negotiate for your grade-point average, get a degree backdated and can pay extra for honors, I think your alma mater is of questionable veracity."

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    DEGREES

I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THEM AS LONG AS THE WORK (EXPERIENCE) IS VERIFIED....LETS SAY YOU HAVE A GUY OR GIRL THAT WORKED IN THE SALES / MARKETING ARENA FOR 12 YEARS - IS SHE LESS QUALIFIED THAN A PERSON THAT COMMITTED TO 2 OR 4 YEARS OF CLASSES? TO BE HONEST...I WOULD RATHER HIRE THE PERSON WITH THE EXPERIENCE.......AND YES....I HAVE MY DEGREE AND IT WAS OBTAINED VIA TRADITIONAL METHODS.....
