World Wide Web Packed Full Of Trash
from the all-of-it-is-useless dept
I went to the dentist earlier today, and he told me random things about my teeth that made me a little confused, so the first thing I did afterwards was do some web searches to see if I could get more info on the things he told me about. It seems I'm not alone in doing this as more and more people turn to the web for medical information whenever they, or a friend or relative, has a major medical condition. At the same time, though, another study has shown that many "medical" websites are full of useless junk and not to be trusted. I'm sure there are plenty of bad sites out there, but the nice thing about the web is that I can read a variety of opinions - see where they come from and decide who's more likely to be telling the truth - and at the very least, speak to my doctor about the issues that are raised. That seems like a better system (though, doctors may not agree) than blindly agreeing to whatever the doctor tells you.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

That said, there's no real solution to this. No entity exists that can regulate the dispensing of advice on the Internet, and unfortunately many individuals simply haven't learned how to think about problems like this.
