World's First Email From Airplane Sent

from the everybody-celebrate dept

The last place in the world where you really are totally cut off from email has just added email. Someone on a Lufthansa airplane has sent the first email via broadband from a regularly scheduled ariplane flight. They're using the Connexion system from Boeing, which has apparently survived the desertion of all the major American airlines. Soon you won't be stuck with whatever terrible movie your flight is showing, and may be able to waste your flight surfing. I know, if I ever get on a plane with full internet access, the first thing I'll do is upload a picture of my food to AirlineMeals.net. I'm sure that's what Boeing was thinking of when they first dreamed up this project.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Whoopie!

Email over broadband! I've been sending and
receiving emails on my RIM pager regularly at
6000 feet for the last 3 years, not to mention
    web surfing.

    It also doesn't cost $3.00 a minute.
