BMG Copy Protecting CDs In Europe

from the blame-the-machine dept

Another step backwards for the music industry. It appears (though, with questionable credibility) that BMG is now planning to make sure that all of their European released CDs include copy protection. As part of this, they're flaunting the request from Philips that no copy-protected CD can use the "CD" label, saying that they feel it still meets the requirements. They also don't put any notification on the packaging that the CD is copy protected. It also seems that if you complain that the copy-protected disc doesn't work in your CD player, you will get back a typo filled message blaming your CD player. I'll admit, the whole thing sounds both a bit sketchy, and the poorly worded email response makes me wonder how "official" this policy is, or if it's some sort of hoax for now. Of course, I have no doubt that the music industry would like to follow this path, but it seems likely to cause quite an uproar (while doing little to stop people sharing music, of course).

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
